URGENT ACTION ITEM: Your assistance is needed
“Parents & Families of South Charlotte Baptist Church & Academy, Please take the time to read the following information, which we have received from the North Carolina Christian School Association, regarding a very important bill that is making its way through the legislative branches of North Carolina. This bill, if signed into law, would be a help and encouragement to many families who would like to have the choice to educate their children in a Christian school. Then, would you please pass this information on, by word of mouth or by social media, to others who may be interested. Thank you.” – Pastor Joseph Campbell
House Bill 944 – Opportunity Scholarship Act – was introduced on April 16, 2013 in the North Carolina General Assembly. This is the legislation that Representative Skip Stam discussed at the recent NCCSA Capital Conference in Raleigh. I have also sent you information about this legislation. This legislation will provide grants (up to $4,200) to parents who enroll students in non-public schools in 5 year old kindergarten, first grade, or if they are in other grades if the student is currently enrolled in public schools for the previous semester.
Currently, the bill has passed its first reading and has been referred to the House Education Committee. Please go to this link to view information about this important legislation. You can download a copy of the bill, a brochure, a list of the sponsors of the bill, a list of the members of the education committee, some talking points, lists of the House and Senate members, a spreadsheet with NCCSA member legislation info, and a debate that was recently on the radio in our state.
Please take the time to review this information. Your help is needed to help us be successful in passing this legislation. Look at the sponsors of the bill and the members of the education committee. If your representative is listed as a sponsor, please contact them and thank them for their support of HB 944. If your representative is a Republican and is NOT listed as a sponsor, please contact them immediately and ask them to be a co-sponsor of the bill. Contact all the members of the education committee and ask their support in voting for the bill.
You can find your school in the NCCSA member legislation info spreadsheet. This list provides your House and Senate districts and the names of the Representatives and Senators who represent your school. At this time, we are only concentrating our efforts with the House members. The lists of the House and Senate members will provide the phone numbers and email addresses for you to use in contacting your legislators.
The passage of this legislation will be a huge benefit to your school and parents. Feel free to forward this information to your parents and staff so as many as possible will be contacting the House members. You can make copies of the brochure available as well.
As the bill progresses through the General Assembly, there will be other times when your assistance will be needed and when you will be called on to act. Thank you in advance for your help and assistance.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
